General Rules for the I-485

You may file this form to register for permanent residence based on the following categories:

• Based on asylum, if you have been physically present in the United States for 1 year after the grant of asylum.

• Based on refugee status, 1 year following your admission as a refugee.

• Based on Cuban citizenship, if you have been physically present in the United States for at least 1 year.

• Based on an immigrant petition. (You cannot request a fee waiver) Click on Other Services.

• Based on admission as the fiancé, if you were admitted to the United States as the K-1 fiancé of a US citizen, and you married that citizen within 90 days of your entry. You also may apply as the K-2 child of such fiancé. (You cannot request a fee waiver). Click on Other Services.

Copy of both sides of your I-94
Copy of passport page with nonimmigrant visa
Copy of passport page with biographic data
Copy of your Birth Certificate
2 passport-style photos (You can attach it digitally)
Criminal History
Report of Medical Examination (Form I-693)
